Introducing Takumi — Side Feed Reimagined

Mastering a craft might take a lifetime. Hours of practice and years of study until the hand and the mind become one, until there is no distance between the imagination and the materials. In Japan such skilled artisans are called Takumi.

No matter where you are on your journey to mastery, Takumi will bring you closer to your work than ever before.

Takumi. An airbrush inspired by artisans.

Keep an eye out this summer for two new Iwata airbrushes!

The Iwata custom Micron Takumi Side Feed Dual Action Airbrush and The Iwata Eclipse Takumi Side Feed Dual Action Airbrush.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What does Takumi mean?

Takumi means “artisan” in Japanese.

Is the Takumi Micron a true Custom Micron?

The Iwata custom Micron Takumi Side Feed Dual Action Airbrush is in every way a Custom Micron.  It sprays with the same Absolute Precision that advanced users have come to expect from Custom Micron.

Are the Custom Micron SB and Eclipse SBS models discontinued?

These models are no longer being manufactured. Parts will still be available on our site and through Iwata retailers.

Will I still be able to buy parts for my CM-SB or SBS?

Yes, parts will still be available on our site and through Iwata retailers. Check out our interactive Parts Finder.

Will the Takumi versions spray the same as the original models?

The Takumi versions will have the same spray characteristics as their category but with better control, responsiveness, and comfort. Check out our 5 Ways to Spray getting started article for more information on our spray categories.

Will I be able to buy new parts to retrofit my old CM-SB or Eclipse SBS?

Some parts like the wide adaptive trigger and pre-set handle will be compatible, however, the optimized Takumi body style is unique to these new airbrush models.

How much will Takumi cost?

The suggested retail for the Custom Micron and Eclipse Takumi will be $585 and $199 respectively.

If I prefer a siphon side feed cup, can I use one with Takumi brushes?

Yes, you can use our existing side feed bottles on your Takumi. See all the sizes here.

Will you make all ECLs Takumi? Meaning, will you add the feature upgrades to ALL ECL brushes?

There are no plans for Takumi version of other Eclipse series models.

Will the Takumis have the same head system parts but with a shortened needle?

Yes, Takumi model will have its own unique shortened needle.

What is the size of the needle?

The new shortened needles will be the same diameter as the needles for the previous side feed models but will have a decreased length to accommodate the Takumi’s compact body style.

Will the Takumi models do fine lines?

Both Takumi models have been enhanced with a new compact design and features to make them more responsive and well suited for precise work. Custom Micron remains the preferred series for extreme detailed spraying.

Will the parts for the Takumi be available for use on other models?

All parts will be available for purchase. The cup adaptor is compatible with most side feed models including the High Performance SB Plus.

The wider trigger can be used with Eclipse and Revolution series airbrushes.

What are the benefits of side feed vs gravity feed?

Side feed and gravity feed both have advantages. Many users prefer side feed because:

  • It provides a direct line of sight as the cup does not obscure the work
  • They like having multiple cup and bottle options
  • They enjoy the ability to spray at any angle, even upside down
  • They like the flexibility of moving the cup or bottle to the left or right side of the airbrush

Will there be an option for a different size cup? 7ml seems too large.

We plan to release a smaller 3ml cup within a few months of the Takumi launch.

When will Takumi be available?

The projected release date for both Takumi models is late summer 2021.
